Service
I meet all and exceed many of the standards from Appendix 4's section on Service and should therefore be granted rank advancement.
As explained on my Full Professor Statement page, I have engaged in considerable College and community service activities. Service is especially meaningful for faculty members from small departments. Every time there is a department- or College-level initiative, assignment, or task it falls on the same shoulders. Unlike a large department where responsibilities get shared by several people, the workload is disproportionately high for faculty in small departments. For example: the same people do assessment/reporting every year, make all the curriculum updates for their classes, supervise all of the part-time faculty, etc., etc., etc. In reality, faculty in small departments never get to "rotate out" of departmental service and let someone else take the reigns.

Exceeding Standard Professional Performance
- Administrative Service: Currently serving as the Department Chair for Education, Family and Human Studies, Social Work, and Student Leadership and Success Studies. Although my primary professional identity is my role as a teacher, and most of the genuinely rewarding parts of what I do occur in the classroom, previous mentors (Dale Smith and Dave Richardson) encouraged me to do administrative work. Now, as I wrap up the third year of my service in this role, it appears that there are no other faculty who are in a position to replace me as the Department Chair, so I am again called upon to prioritize this service over my traditional faculty role. I think it's fair to say that, for someone whose identity is as a teacher, this service is a significant sacrifice.
- Innovation: As described elsewhere in my portfolio, I piloted a redesigned high-impact approach to ePortfolios around principles of transparency and equity, resulting in a fundamental shift in the students' views about the ePortfolio and General Education. Click here for details about that project and to read the students' comments.
- Extracurricular Teaching: I have taught/presented trainings for adjunct faculty, I presented Tech Tips and other information to other faculty and Department Chairs, and I helped develop the First Amendment workshop hosted by the Professional Development office last year.
- Institutional Representation: I have not only represented the institution at the USHE Family and Human Development major's meetings, but I have chaired the committee for five years and will chair it again this year.
- Scholarship: See the publication and presentation list on my Professional Activity & Development page.
- Recognition: I was featured in an article called World Class: Dedicated, devoted, determined SLCC faculty give their all to lift students in the Winter/Spring 2019 issue of SLCC Magazine See p. 31 here: issuu.com/slccutah/docs/slcc-magazine-winterspring-2019
